From the Editor: Reimagining Enterprise Search with Machine Learning

Search is the ultimate data interaction experience for end-users. For decades, the enterprise space attempted to build search products that could rival the “Google experience” in consumer markets. The enterprise search space has grown to tens of billions of dollars with exciting newcomers such as Elastic or Algolia. However, despite the progress, most enterprise search products still remain stuck in the keyword search experience of the early 2000s. Can artificial intelligence(AI) change that?

The emergence of deep learning and disciplines such as natural language understanding(NLU) opens the door to new possibilities in the enterprise search space. Deep learning methods could enable queries in natural language or inferring relationships between documents. This week, Amazon took a step at reimagining the enterprise search experience using deep learning with the introduction of Kendra, a new service that uses natural languages to search documents across heterogeneous sources. Beyond the individual release, Kendra is a stepping stone towards a new generation of enterprise search technologies with AI as a first-class citizen.
