Anthropic is widely known as OpenAI’s main rival and the creators of the Claude model. However, in recent months, Anthropic has been expanding beyond its core model capabilities into areas such as agentic workflows and developer frameworks. One of their most recent open source release sits precisely at the interception of these two areas.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open-source standard designed to connect AI assistants with various data sources, such as content repositories, business tools, and development environments. This essay provides a technical exploration of MCP, focusing on its core architecture and key concepts.
