One of the tips I’ve found really useful when designing machine learning systems is to follow the many architecture best practices outlined by companies doing machine learning at scale. Picasso’s phrase, “good artists borrow, great artists steal” definitely applies when it comes to machine learning architectures. The nascent stage of machine learning technologies has forced the likes of Uber, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, LinkedIn to really innovate in the architectures needed to scale these types of systems and, as a result, produce very innovative ideas in this area.
LinkedIn is one of the companies that has been applying machine learning to large scale scenarios for years, but little was known about the specific methods and techniques used at the software giant.
